When you think of anime that has stood the test of time, one name likely comes to mind: Dragon Ball Z. This show has remained to be a favorite among the anime lovers since its first launch in the year 1989. Oh, don’t worry – somehow Goku could always come up with a victory, most often after he receives a power boost and then delivers an equally powerful speech on how much he loves fighting.

 

The Power of Friendship... and the Power Levels

In fact, one of the pleasures Dragon Ball Z offers is the establishment of suspense, always thanks to the power levels obsession. In every episode you’re guaranteed to hear someone exclaim, “His power level is over 9000!” And if you’ve seen the show, you know that’s no small deal; that’s a big deal. When it comes to power levels, no characters around can be relied on, because in the next episode the hero with zero power may hardly survive, while it others the hero may demonstrate that his laboratories allow destroying planets. He glowers, she sulks, then they make up and kiss: highly cinematic and farcical if one looks at it with open eyes.

And then there’s the whole ‘training’ thing. Goku, I don’t know how you do it but you spend at the very least ¾ of this series in a hyperbolic time chamber, fighting against gravity, or doing some preposterous training exercise which somehow makes you stronger each time. Well, you would have assumed that there must be a point where he cannot continue to get anymore powerful after few episodes but, uh no. There’s always a new level of power to reach, and let’s face it: We watch because we want to see how much harder Goku could push it this time. Spoiler alert: He’s always a bit beefier than last time.

 

The Supporting Cast: Goku’s (Sometimes) Reliable Friends

Speaking of the protagonist, Dragon Ball Z sports an amazing ensemble of characters. We have his best friend Vegeta, who may as well be the anime personification of grumpy cat. Vegeta has pride so overblown that even arrogance seems to pale in comparison All right it is actually quite impressive! He’ll often mouth off that he is the ‘Prince of all Saiyans,’ but this hothead character and his overflowing rage make him popular because he’s consistently annoyed and we get to watch him get progressively more angry.

Next is Piccolo, green, giant and wise Namekian who is always a master of solving any issues in the best way. He may not be the best fighter, but you can bet your bottom dollar he will give you a good game plan. Not to mention Gohan, Goku’s son, who actually seems to be the smartest character in the show, except for maybe the teenage years when one gets particularly dramatic for some reason.

But really, let’s discuss Krillin here for a moment. The poor guy. He’s human and what do you know, he always ends up surrounded by people who can punch thru mountains and destroy planets with a snap of a finger. For instance, it reminds me of when he is always the second string player who is just there to cheer. But hey, he gets to have some props thrown his way from time to time.

 

Filler Episodes: A Necessary Evil?

So now let me ask those of you, who have seen Dragon Ball Z, all about what are known as “filler” episodes. To the uninitiated, a filler episode can be described simply as one that isn’t conducive to driving home the main narrative. They prefer subplots, training scenes, or in some circumstances, an entire half hour episode showing Goku getting ready for a battle (which actually exists). Though filler can be irritating at times, it is somewhat similar to plot where the characters take their time—need it before things start getting heated up.




But let’s be real: you can only take a series of episodes of Goku eating and talking about the food for a limited time.

Despite the fact that the first episodes of Dragon
