Introduction 

Sholay, a product of 1975, bowed over the Indian film industry and formally entered the Indian film fans’ regular diet. This action-drama film is still one of the best movies in the history of Indian cinema, and the film was directed by Ramesh Sippy. The movie brought together everything: friendship, hate, love, drama, action, and jokes which still make people laugh. In its broadest sense, Sholay is the story of two rogues, Jai, played by Amitabh Bachchan and Veeru portrayed by Dharmendra, who take up a contract to eliminate the dreaded bandit, Gabbar Singh, portrayed by Amjad Khan for a retired policemen, Thakur Baldev Singh. Sounds simple, right? Well, it’s not just about catching the bad guy. This is where there are personal stakes, thillers and clashes of epic proportions, quotes and delivery thereof, anti-heroes and villains, the heroes.



Jai and Veeru are good friends They have distressed friendship. It looks like they are not walking around wearing matching T-shirts with ‘Best Friends Forever’ written on them but they certainly have each other’s back. Veeru in one scene, in the attempt of impressing and proposed to a local woman, Basanti (Hema Malini) makes a low and funny attempt. Through a little dramatization, a hint of comedy and a tsp of romance; their relation may be as interesting as the plot made.


 

Gabbar Singh: The Ultimate Villain

When we talk of Sholay, the first name that pops up in mind is Gabbar Singh, notwithstanding the legendary Amitabh Bachchan. This role is portrayed by Amjad Khan and has hence put him at the list of lavish villains in Bollywood. Some of the many iconic lines he gave were; Do you know how many men were there? and “Jo darr gaya, samjho marr gaya”, recite at parties, weddings and any other social functions in today’s generation as well. Gabbar is plain wicked, unkind, and a little dramatic but despite his villainous conduct, one watches the movie in splits while at the same time frightened of the villain.



Gabbar has another face and it is the evil face along with personality that makes him the villain he is. It was a shame for Gollum; he is not just a murderer but enjoys an excellent company of bullying his victims to death with words. His manner of laughing alone will have you questioning if you should laugh or run away for the rest of your nights. The very thugs that he leads flinch at his anger, and rightfully so!
 

Jai and Veeru’s Star Draw

If you are to imagine Sholay, two things that come to your mind are Jai – Veeru partnership. These characters who are shown on the screen are indeed well portrayed by two of the legendary Bollywood actors; Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra. While one is introvert, aggressive and calm as ice (Jai), the other one is extrovert, flirtatious and always ready with quick come back lines (Veeru). The two make the best of friends that make you rolling on the floor laughing at the antics or remain glued to the television to follow their next move.

Their chemistry is magnetic. Whether it is in a funny mood cracking jokes with each other, or in a philosophical frame of mind or when they are hiding from Gabbar’s men, Jai and Veeru are the real spirit of Sholay. Their chemistry thus makes the film believable and real despite the large than life setting of the motion picture. I guess it’s empowering to see your best friends fight the world and you have no choice but to cheer them on, more so when they put themselves in some really risky scenarios.

And they ever helpful and friendly with their “Yeh dosti” song? It is basically one of those old but gold songs about friends that are wild and crazy. Just picture it: two cowboys, riding horses, and singing about their friends ‘bulletproof’ friendship as the sun returns to the horizon. Classic!

Thakur Baldev Singh: The Mentor

Also another principal actor of Sholay is Thakur Baldev Singh, portrayed by Sanjeev Kumar. While Thakur himself used to be a police officer, he now employs the services of Jai and Veeru to requite the devastation of Thakur’s family by Gabbar Singh. The thing that distinguishes Thakur from the other action heroes is that he’s not your typical hero who is young and fit. Thakur is older, more experienced and still has it in for a few fights.

Though he is not in frames in which action is taking place, he serves as a source of great advice to Jai and Veeru. Oh, and he’s a male protagonist who doesn’t mind losing both his arms, let alone fight for justice. Thakur is as much a representation of never bowing down no matter how much odds are against you as much as Thakur = you touch me, you’re dead.

 

Basanti and Radha: The Strong Women

When people think of Sholay and its impact they can majorly associate it to the action packed sequences and the male protagonists of the movie. Hema Malini is a strong and stubborn woman named Basanti who navigates a cart and know how to drive a horse cart. She infuses into the film an element of cheerfulness and albeit Israelis Virendra and especially with Veeru. There is plenty of teasing between Basanti and Veeru, and there are still clearly tender feelings flowing between the two characters.



On the other hand, there is a positive character of Radha from whoa played by Jaya Bachchan and who forms the very center of the movie. A porter who has lost a great deal in life yet she sill remains strong and dignified. While what Basanti has is not the presence but rather the lack of screen time wherein Radha on the other hand plays an important but intense role in the film emotionally.

Memorable Dialogue and Music

As much as the film Sholay is great action and the male protagonists, the ladies do not take a background wallflower; they play their parts fully in the drama. Hema Malini is great as Basanti, a sexually liberated woman who invincible and unbreakable and known to be a professional cart driver. She adds freshness and laughter to the movie, especially with characters of Veeru. Culturally accurate humor protruded through the banters between the two – Basanti and Veeru but there were also some softer scenes that portrayed affection.

On the other hand there is Radha, the sweet natured character portrayed by Jaya Bhaduri Bachchan; in fact this character forms the soul of this movie. A woman that feels she has lost everything but still stands tall and strong. Although her scenes are not as dramatic as those of Basanti, Radha is equally an important feeling character in the movie.

Memorable Dialogue and Music

One of the major characteristics of Sholay success or the formula one can easily say is the dialogue of the movie. It’s that type of picture you can repeat on the big screen many times over and still eagerly listen to hear some of the memorable lines again and again. Whether it is ‘Kitne aadmi thi’ the… or Jai’s “Holi kab hai?” (a question that can still make one cringe), the dialogue delivery in Sholay is what transforms the film simply into an action film to what it is remembered as today – a full-fledged emblem of cult Indian cinema.
